Casino Cake

My boyfriend's grandpa turned 80 and I was asked to make a sheet cake and about 100 cupcakes for the event. The party was casino themed, equiped with poker, blackjack, craps, and roulette. The cupcakes were easy! Just white icing and either a red diamond or heart or a black spade or club went on top. The sheet cake was the fun part. Here's the first one I made and iced.

I have no idea what went wrong but obviously something did. So I made another. Side note, that cake still tasted great!

Much better. However, I didn't think to use the extender recipe so it wasnt very tall. So I made a third to make it two layers.

Success! Just need to do some smoothing out.

Off to a good start! Add a little red, shell border.

Now on to the top. The original idea was to use the fondant cutouts (that are also on the cupcakes) and just make a simple border. So I did that.

Then I took a step back and thought, "Wow! This is too plain." I had to determine what else I could make with my black and red fondant (all that I had at the moment) that would go with our "casino" theme. So, I made some dice.

Admittedly,  it looked better,  but still plain. I figured writing the message would take up space and fix it.

Nope. Better. But not fixed. Therefore, along came poker chips. And a border on the board.

So much better! But remember, the cake wasn't it. There were cupcakes, too.

Lots of cupcakes. But it all turned out wondeeful!
